SAF and IT4IT 3.0.1
Nature and status of the approach
The Open Group IT4IT™ Standard, Version 3.0.1 is a reference architecture for managing digital products across their lifecycle. Version 3.0.1 was published in 2024 as a maintenance update to the 3.0 line and includes Technical Corrigendum 1. Unlike ITSM guidance, IT4IT intentionally describes a target architecture of management functions and data.
Purpose and audience
IT4IT is intended for digital and IT business leaders, architects, product owners, and transformation, development, and operations managers. It helps connect investments, the product lifecycle, value streams, functional components, and operational data independently of a particular tool vendor.
Management scope and unit
The primary unit is a digital product and its lifecycle in a portfolio. The reference architecture connects the capabilities, value streams, functions, and data objects needed for management. In SAF, Product is not a separate type: it is represented by a management grouping of services, systems, actors, and investments.
Concepts and SAF mappings
| IT4IT | Nearest concept in SAF | Type / confidence | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital Product | Grouping of services, systems, components, and owners | Composite / high | Product governs an investment boundary and lifecycle. |
| Product or service model data | Services and the supporting architectural chain | Composite / medium | IT4IT defines management data objects; SAF defines subject-area objects of the organization. |
| Value Stream | Several Processes, Capabilities, and states | Composite / high | It is not one SAF Process. |
| Functional Component | System or Component of the management toolchain | Partial / high | This is a normative building block of the reference architecture, not any product component. |
| Data Object | Information Object | Partial / high | The boundary and lifecycle of a particular data object must be mapped explicitly. |
| Digital product team / stakeholder | Actor with a role | Partial / medium | Team structure remains external. |
Relationships
IT4IT connects portfolio and product-lifecycle management to value streams, functional components, and exchanged data objects. SAF can provide the architectural projection of a digital product: Services, Processes, Capabilities, Systems, Components, Integrations, Deployments, and resources. Feedback from IT4IT confirms the actual state of delivery and operations.
Lifecycle and organization of work
The standard covers the path from an investment decision through digital-product retirement. Management data moves between functions without dependence on one process framework or tool. SAF records persistent states and dependencies, while IT4IT explains which management functions and data support transitions.
Roles and governance
IT4IT assumes product accountability, portfolio decisions, and end-to-end data management. A SAF Actor may own a Service, System, or Component, but product accountability and portfolio governance require an external role and decision model.
Measures, maturity, and adaptation
The reference architecture is oriented toward measurable value and lifecycle manageability, but it does not correspond to SAF's maturity matrix. An organization can adopt only the required value streams and functions while retaining SAF identifiers as context for management data.
Using the approaches together
IT4IT is the most direct bridge between the architectural and operational layers of this study. SAF describes the business meaning and structure of a digital product; IT4IT describes the target architecture of functions that manage that product. The integration contract should link product_id to a set of service_id values and architectural objects, and IT4IT data objects to authoritative sources and SAF Information Objects.
Mapping limitations
The standard is licensed by The Open Group. This page paraphrases its public description and does not reproduce the official reference architecture, tables, or ArchiMate model. The composite Product correspondence is not a proposal to add Product to the SAF core.
